Holy Monastery of Agios Markos in Proti

Witness of History and Faith: The Resurrection of the Monastery of Agios Markos in Florina
The Holy Monastery of Agios Markos in Proti is a historic monastery in Western Macedonia, located on the Varnountas mountain range at an altitude of 959 meters. It is only ten minutes away from the city of Florina and has become a significant religious and historical center of the region. It was founded in 1864 by Metropolitan Meletios of Moglena and quickly became a spiritual refuge for the local population. However, its significance went beyond religious life, as it played a decisive role during the Macedonian Struggle, hosting important figures such as Pavlos Melas and Lakis Pyrzas, who used the monastery as a base for their resistance.
After the liberation of the region from the Ottoman Empire, the monastery experienced residential growth. However, the destruction it suffered during World War II and the Greek Civil War led to its complete decline. The buildings were flattened by bombings, and the small sisterhood of nuns was forced to leave. The monastery was re-established in 2000 by His Eminence Metropolitan Theoklitos of Florina, Prespa, and Eordea, by Presidential Decree, and has since undergone extensive restoration work. A new wing was built to accommodate the monks, the Katholikon (main church) was renovated, and the surrounding area was reshaped, turning the monastery into a welcoming and peaceful haven for pilgrims.
Today, the Holy Monastery of Agios Markos operates as a cenobium, following the Orthodox monastic tradition. Its revival has significantly contributed to the religious and cultural rejuvenation of the region, becoming a focal point for pilgrims and those interested in its history and role in the Macedonian Struggle. Set in an exceptionally beautiful natural environment, the monastery offers tranquility, prayer, and spiritual guidance to all who visit. With the continuous care of the brotherhood and the support of the local Church, it stands as a revived religious treasure for Florina and the wider region.
