The Holy Monastery of Agia Paraskevi in Vasiliada: From Dependency to Spiritual Resurrection

The Holy Monastery of Agia Paraskevi in Vasiliada, built on the northwestern foothills of Mount Mourikio, is a significant religious and historical site in the region. With stunning views over the plain of the villages Stavropotamos and Melissotopos, as well as toward the Monastery of Agioi Anargyroi, the monastery occupies a strategic position, just one kilometer from the Kastoria–Thessaloniki national road, near Amyntaio. According to tradition, it was a Vakoufi monastic dependency —meaning a metochi of the Monastery of Agioi Anargyroi— until it gained independence in 1991.

The small church of Agia Paraskevi, which forms the core of the monastery, stands out for its beautiful frescoes and icons that adorn its interior, giving it a distinctive spiritual atmosphere. According to oral tradition, the church was built before the liberation of Macedonia in 1912–13, to serve the worship needs of Christians working on the estate of a Turkish bey. The frescoes, the work of talented iconographers, are notable examples of the religious art of the time.

Despite its small size, the monastery preserves a unique religious and artistic character. For centuries, it was a point of reference for the local population, offering spiritual support and refuge. Since its independence in 1991, monastic life has further developed, strengthening its spiritual role. Today, the monastery functions as a place of prayer, tranquility, and contemplation, offering visitors the opportunity to experience its peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.
