Monastery of Agios Panteleimon and Eubouli: From Submersion to the Revival of Spiritual Life
The Holy Monastery of Agios Panteleimon and Eubouli in Amyntaio is a modern monastery located in an idyllic spot between Lake Vegoritida and Lake Petron, near the village of Agios Panteleimonas. The monastery is the continuation of an older historical monastery that was submerged by the waters of Lake Vegoritida in 1830, following a strong earthquake and the overflow of the lake's waters. The old monastery, dedicated to the Great Martyr Agios Panteleimon, likely operated since the Paleologan era, even before the Ottoman conquest of the region.
The current monastery was founded in 2004 by His Eminence Metropolitan Theoklitos of Florina, Prespa, and Eordea, according to a decision of the Holy Synod and a Presidential Decree. It was re-established in a new location near the pre-existing church of Agios Georgios the Trophy-bearer, which dates back to the 18th century and continues to function as the monastery’s chapel. The monastery is dedicated to both Agios Panteleimon and his mother, Agia Eubouli, who played a pivotal role in his Christian education and upbringing.
Today, the monastery operates as a women's communal brotherhood, with the nuns engaged in traditional monastic crafts such as iconography, embroidery, and the production of goods. Its location, nestled between two lakes and with a breathtaking natural view, makes it an ideal destination for pilgrimage, prayer, and reflection. The monastery is an important spiritual center for the region, offering the faithful a place of peace and spiritual seeking.
The Holy Monastery of Agios Panteleimon and Eubouli is a revival of the historical monastic life in the area, combining its rich history with its modern spiritual activities. Its connection to the old monastery that was lost to the waters of the lake and its beautiful location make it a unique religious and historical monument of Amyntaio.
