Monastery of Agios Kosmas in Ardassa: A New Spiritual Destination in Nature
The Holy Monastery of Agios Kosmas of Aetolia in Ardassa is one of the newest monastic foundations of the Holy Metropolis of Florina, Prespa, and Eordaia. Established in 2004 by His Eminence Metropolitan Theoklitos, the monastery is dedicated to Agios Kosmas of Aetolia, one of the most significant neomartyrs and teachers of the Genos. Nestled in a serene landscape at the foot of Mount Askio, between the villages of Ardassa and Kryovrysi, it lies just ten minutes from the city of Ptolemaida.
The laying of the foundation stone took place on 17 September 2005, in the presence of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomeos, Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens, and Metropolitan Theoklitos—a moment that underscored the spiritual and ecclesiastical significance of the monastery. Today, it functions as a coenobitic monastery, following the Orthodox monastic tradition. The central wing—almost fully completed—includes living quarters for the brethren, guest accommodation for pilgrims, and spaces for spiritual gatherings. A woodworking workshop also operates within the monastery, where the monks engage in the creation of ecclesiastical furnishings and woodcarvings, upholding the tradition of Athonite craftsmanship.
The monastery’s feast day is celebrated annually on the 24th of August, in honor of Agios Kosmas of Aetolia. This day draws many faithful who participate in the divine services, venerate the relics, and receive the blessing of the Agios. In addition to the main katholikon, the monastery includes four chapels dedicated to revered figures of the Orthodox Church: Agios Silouanos the Athonite, Agios Efstathios, and Agios Raphail, Agios Nikolaos, and Agia Eirini.
Surrounded by the natural beauty of Mount Askio, the monastery offers an ideal setting for spiritual stillness and inner reflection. Visitors are welcomed to experience the rhythm of monastic life, attend services, and receive spiritual counsel from the monastic brotherhood. Though newly established, the Holy Monastery of Agios Kosmas of Aetolia is already a growing spiritual center that attracts increasing numbers of pilgrims each year.
