A Growing Spiritual Center in Western Macedonia
The Holy Monastery of Agios Grigorios Palamas in Antigonos is one of the newest monasteries in the region, located on the slopes of Mount Vermio at an altitude of 725 meters. Nestled between the municipal districts of Antigonos and Maniaki in the Municipality of Filotas, the monastery is easily accessible—just a 10-minute drive from the cities of Ptolemaida and Amyntaio. It was founded on the initiative of His Eminence Theoklitos, Metropolitan of Florina, Prespa, and Eordaia, and established through a Presidential Decree. Dedicated to Agios Grigorios Palamas, one of the most important theologians and Fathers of the Church, the monastery honors the theology of the Uncreated Light and the hesychastic tradition.
Although still under construction—with the katholikon (main church) and one monastic wing in progress—the monastery has already begun to attract visitors and pilgrims. Its idyllic location, surrounded by serene natural beauty, offers a peaceful setting ideal for spiritual rest and contemplation. Its proximity to major towns makes it easy for the faithful to visit, while the vision is to develop it into a major Orthodox center, preserving the monastic heritage and theological legacy of Agios Grigorios Palamas.
Upon completion, the monastery is expected to adopt a coenobitic monastic structure, providing a setting for monks devoted to prayer, study, and spiritual service to the faithful. The Holy Monastery of Agios Grigorios Palamas in Antigonos represents a project with great promise—poised to become a beacon of Orthodox spirituality and monastic life in Western Macedonia. Future plans include developing educational and cultural programs such as seminars and lectures on the theology of Agios Grigorios and the hesychast tradition, as well as hosting pilgrims and scholars in dedicated guest facilities. With its deep spiritual roots and commitment to Orthodox tradition, the monastery aims to become a place of inspiration, faith, and learning for all who visit.
