Holy Monastery of Agios Georgios in Melanthio: A New Chapter in Western Macedonia’s Monastic Tradition
The Holy Monastery of Agios Georgios in Melanthio is the most recently founded monastery in the region of Kastoria. It is located in the area known as Gialada, at the entrance of the village of Melanthio, approximately 24 kilometers southwest of the city of Kastoria. Established in 2008, the monastery was created as a women's monastic community dedicated to Agios Georgios the Trophy-Bearer, one of the most beloved saints in the Orthodox tradition. Nestled in a serene landscape of natural beauty, the monastery offers an ideal setting for prayer and monastic life.
The katholikon (main church) is an impressive cross-in-square basilica with a dome, echoing the architectural style of the Monastery of Panagia Phaneromeni in Kastoria.
