Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos (Genethlio Theotokou) in Dryovouno

A Spiritual Landmark on Mount Askio

Situated at an altitude of 820 meters on the foothills of Mount Askio, the Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Dryovouno stands as a significant spiritual and historical landmark in the Voio region of Kozani. Located on the northern outskirts of the village of Dryovouno, its early history remains uncertain, but tradition associates its foundation with the 13th century. Over the centuries, the monastery has served as a vital spiritual center for the local population.

One of the most notable moments in the monastery’s history was the visit of Saint Kosmas of Aetolia in the 18th century, an event that greatly enhanced its religious and spiritual importance. The monastery is also linked to the life and martyrdom of Hieromartyr Dionysios, its last abbot, who was known for his ascetic life and dedication to teaching local youth in secret schools during the Ottoman occupation. In 1830, Dionysios was captured, tortured, and hanged by the Ottomans, leaving a profound mark on the local community.

Despite suffering destruction and looting during wartime, the monastery's katholikon (main church) and several of its frescoes survived until the end of World War II. A major renovation began in the 1940s, initiated by Father Stefanos Tsantiris under the guidance of Metropolitan Antonios of Sisani and Siatista, ushering in a new era for this sacred site.

Today, the Holy Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos in Dryovouno continues to operate as a center of faith and spiritual reflection. Its rich history, the witness of its saints, and its enduring service to the community make it a living monument of faith and culture, keeping the region’s spiritual heritage alive. It remains a place of hope and blessing for all who visit.
