Holy Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa

Holy Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa: A Byzantine Jewel on the Lake of Kastoria
The Holy Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa, built on the eastern shore of Lake Orestiada, about 5 kilometers from Kastoria and across from the village of Mavrovo (Mavrochori), is one of the most important religious and historical monuments of the region. Dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos, the monastery was probably founded in the 11th century, with its first church dating to the 12th century. Originally known as Moni tis Panagias tis Mesonisiotissas, the name “Mavriotissa” was established in the 17th century due to its restoration by the inhabitants of Mavrovo.
The katholikon of the monastery is an outstanding example of Byzantine architecture, with a single-chamber structure, wooden roof, and a large semicircular apse on the eastern side. The narthex, added later, is lower and gives the whole a distinctive harmony. The frescoes of the church, dating to the early 13th century, are masterpieces of Byzantine art. They depict scenes such as the Second Coming and the Holy Trinity, and the iconography is attributed to five different artists, underlining the importance of the church.
On the southern side of the church, the chapel of Agios Ioannis Theologos was added in the 16th century, also decorated with impressive frescoes. The frescoes in the narthex, dated between 1259 and 1264, reveal the influence of Emperor Michail VIII Palaiologos, indicating a close connection between the monastery and the imperial court.
The monastery was closed for a long period during Ottoman rule but was re-established in 1998 and now functions regularly. The complex includes, in addition to the main church and the chapel, the hegoumenion, monastic cells, bell tower, guesthouse, and an exhibition space with religious artifacts and relics. The natural beauty of the lakeside location and the monastery’s rich history make it a unique destination for visitors and pilgrims.
