Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos (Genniseos Theotokou) in Polypotamo

In the center of Polypotamo stands the parish church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, built in 1913. This three-aisled basilica, featuring a saddle-shaped roof and Byzantine-style iconography on its iconostasis, became the village’s main parish church in 1927, reflecting the historical development of the community. Constructed with finely carved stone and meticulous craftsmanship, it showcases the artistic skill of the masons of that era.

The church impresses with its semi-hexagonal sanctuary apse and the tower-like bell tower on the western side, which is directly connected to the main entrance. A secondary entrance on the southern side, adapted to the natural slope of the terrain, along with a "Π"-shaped women's gallery on the western side, highlights the careful spatial planning. The central nave, elevated and bright due to its large rectangular windows, enhances the church’s sense of grandeur and spiritual elevation.

Today, the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos remains a vibrant religious center of Polypotamo, combining its architectural significance with its religious and social role. The harmony of its forms and the spiritual atmosphere it exudes make it one of the most important churches in the wider region of Florina.
