Church of Agios Georgios in Anarrachi

In Anarrachi, Eordaia, the Church of Agios Georgios stands as a significant religious and historical monument, with a history dating back to the Ottoman period. The original church, a single-aisled basilica built in 1858 while the region was still under Ottoman rule, was characterized by a simple structure made of stone with a wooden roof. Its small windows on the northern and southern sides, the metal central entrance, and an inscription referring to the area as "Devri" (the old name of Anarrachi) were distinctive features of this sacred site.

According to research, in 1927, the old church was demolished and replaced by the present one, which nonetheless preserves the historical memory of its predecessor. The original 1858 inscription, which has been preserved to this day, serves as an important historical record for visiting worshippers.

Though modern, the current church continues to be a center of religious and social life in Anarrachi, maintaining its connection to the past. The annual feast of Agios Georgios (April 23) provides an opportunity for residents to celebrate not only their faith but also their historical heritage, reminding them of the region’s turbulent journey from the Ottoman period to the present day.
