Church of Agios Georgios in Korisos

The Church of Agios Georgios, a cemetery church in Korisos, Kastoria, is a religious monument of historical and artistic significance. Built in 1887 (or, according to some sources, in 1882), it follows the architectural style of a three-aisled basilica with a wooden roof, characteristic of the folk architecture of that era. Located southeast of the settlement, the church features an impressive wooden iconostasis and frescoes reflecting the Italo-Russian style, painted by iconographer Athanasios Panagiotou from Kastoria.
Inside, notable frescoes include depictions of the Virgin Mary and the Annunciation in the apse of the sanctuary. The prothesis wall hosts a rare portrayal of the Extreme Humility, showing Christ in the tomb with the Theotokos. An inscription above the sanctuary’s apse confirms the year of construction.
The church is historically linked to the events of the Macedonian Struggle, as it was one of the focal points of the conflict between the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Bulgarian Exarchate. Today, it remains both a place of worship and a cultural landmark, reflecting the spiritual and artistic heritage of Kastoria.
