Holy Monastery of Agios Nikolaos in Tsirilovo

Monastery of Agios Nikolaos in Tsirilovo: A Spiritual Refuge on the Slopes of Askio
The Holy Monastery of Agios Nikolaos in Tsirilovo is built on the western slopes of Mount Askio, about 4 kilometers southeast of Korissos and 19 kilometers east of Kastoria. It is believed that the first structures date back to the 17th century, while in the 19th century, the monastery became an important religious and cultural center. Under the guidance of Abbot Grigorios Diamantidis, it operated as an orphanage and school, offering education and protection to the local population.
The monastery played a decisive role during the Macedonian Struggle. In 1904, it hosted Pavlos Melas, as evidenced by letters he wrote to his wife, Natalia Dragoumi. However, on February 26, 1905, the monastery was looted and burned by the Bulgarian komitadjis in retaliation for its involvement in the resistance. Following its destruction, the monastery fell into decline and functioned as a dependency (metochi) of the nearby Monastery of Agioi Anargyroi until 1960.
The revival of the monastery began in 1963 through the efforts of Archimandrite Sebastianos Stefanopoulos, who undertook the restoration of its buildings and the reorganization of monastic life. At that time, a new wing was constructed, along with the chapel of Saint Antonios and the new katholikon, which follows the architectural style of a three-aisled basilica. Originally a men’s monastery, it was later converted into a women’s monastery by decision of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.
Today, the Holy Monastery of Agios Nikolaos in Tsirilovo serves as a significant spiritual center, upholding the Orthodox monastic tradition. The feast of Agios Nikolaos on December 6 and the celebration of the translation of his relics on May 20 draw many faithful. The sisterhood continues to preserve tradition and contribute to the spiritual life of the region. With its rich history and the devotion of its monastics, the monastery remains a place of faith, hope, and cultural heritage.
