Tree of the Enlightener Kosmas of Aetolia

In the village of Agios Kosmas, Grevena (formerly Tsiraki), an important historical element is preserved: an oak tree (tseros) linked to the visit of the Enlightener Kosmas of Aetolia in 1777, during his third apostolic mission. According to local accounts, Agios Kosmas requested a blacksmith to forge an iron cross, which he then placed on the tree.
In 1940, a large branch of the tree broke, and in 1947, the entire tseros fell—events that locals associated with the wartime conflicts of the period (the Greco-Italian War and the Civil War). In 1950, the cross was discovered, and a small shrine was erected, followed by the construction of the Church of Agios Kosmas in 1967.
Today, the original cross is displayed as a historical relic, while new oak trees have been planted at the original site. This location serves as a significant reference point for studying the work of Kosmas of Aetolia in Western Macedonia and for preserving the historical memory of local communities.
